Rising star Angel Billen’s journey to weightlifting greatness

At just 17 years old, Angel Billen has already established herself as an exceptional weightlifter. She comes from a family steeped in athletic achievement, with her father, Rustom-E-hind and Mahabharat Kesri Harjit Singh Billen, having dedicated 28 years to wrestling. Now the owner and coach at Rustom Wrestling Club, he has been a significant influence on Angel’s career.

With two older sisters, Helena and Jeenat Billen, who have both excelled in national and international competitions, Angel began her own journey in weightlifting at the tender age of six.

Her siblings have accumulated numerous gold medals, while her brother is a national champion in wrestling striving for international success.

Angel’s impressive accolades include four gold medals at the Commonwealth Championships (two in youth and two in junior categories), two silver and one gold medal at the Youth Pan American Championships, two silver medals at the Youth World Championships, as well as being the junior national champion and a multiple-time provincial and BC champion.
A standout moment in her career was her recent performance at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Suva, Fiji, where she lifted an astonishing 127 kg in her final clean and jerk attempt, coupled with a 97 kg snatch that secured her the lead in that segment.

Throughout her 11 years in the sport, weightlifting has imparted valuable lessons to Angel, who expresses immense gratitude for the support of her family and community.

Her ultimate aspiration is to compete in the Olympic Games and win a gold medal. Angel encourages young athletes to persevere, stressing that hard work and dedication ultimately lead to success. Her inspiring journey exemplifies the power of determination and the rewards that follow.
